Artists in Our Community

What does the art of the past mean to the artist of the present? The Kimbell regularly engages with artists and performers to highlight connections with our permanent collection, architecture, and special exhibitions through gallery talks, studio workshops, demonstrations, and auditorium presentations. Creative engagement with professionals, as well as skill-building opportunities for amateur enthusiasts, has remained central to museum programming from the start.

Access Programs and Initiatives

Over the decades, the Kimbell has worked with community partners, educators, and consultants to foster a welcoming environment with programs and resources designed for all ages and abilities. Visitors may choose from a range of experiences developed for specific needs, such as descriptive language tours for individuals who are blind or who have low vision, or schedule accommodations such as ASL interpretation and CART captioning. Additional resources such as large-print label booklets or social narratives for individuals on the Autism spectrum help to support comfortable and engaging museum visits.

Members Making a Difference

Launched in 1982 to invite expanding audiences to deepen their involvement with the Kimbell, the membership program has dramatically grown over the years thanks to the loyal and enthusiastic participation of supporters. In appreciation, the Kimbell offers benefits such as event invitations, discounts, free exhibition admission, and the twice-annual Calendar magazine—as well as unique travel opportunities and happenings for young professionals.

Kimbell Docents

Dedicated, curious, enthusiastic, and well-informed are among the many qualities associated with our volunteer docents, who have facilitated tours and assisted with programs since the Kimbell first opened its doors in 1972. Their commendable service to the museum and the greater community adds up to thousands of annual visitors, hundreds of pages of readings, countless hours of tour preparation, and our deepest gratitude.

Nuestro Kimbell

Nuestro Kimbell (Our Kimbell) was established in 2016 by a founding committee of civic and community leaders. The original mandate focused on developing Spanish-language resources as well as promotional and engagement strategies to cultivate audiences that reflect the rich cultural diversity of North Texas. Today, Nuestro Kimbell committee stakeholders continue to serve in a vital capacity, advising and helping to shape the museum’s ongoing efforts to foster meaningful, inclusive, and accessible museum experiences for all.

Current Issues in the Arts

Programs like State of the Arts Fort Worth and ArtsAccess—produced in partnership by KERA’s Art & Seek, the Kimbell Art Museum, the Dallas Morning News, and the Fort Worth Report—bring together local artists, experts, and arts leaders to discuss important trends and issues affecting North Texas arts and cultural organizations.

Early Learning

Generations of children—along with their favorite adults—have explored, created, and formed lasting memories at the Kimbell during festivals, in-depth workshops, and lively story times. In more recent years, our Studio A play space in the Piano Pavilion has become a favorite destination for families with young children who delight in the colorful surroundings and age-appropriate learning toys. Families also venture into the galleries for careful looking and discussion during interactive tours or with popular Learning to Look guides, available in both English and Spanish.

Student Tours and Programs

Every year, the Kimbell welcomes tens of thousands of students for guided tours and studio workshops. Our approach to student engagement is designed to complement classroom instruction, foster connections with artworks and with each other, and ultimately to cultivate life-long learners. Established partnerships with school districts and community organizations include additional opportunities such as multi-visit programs and student “gallery guide” events.

Colleges and Universities

The Kimbell has served as another classroom for college and university students who visit with faculty, on assignment, or for University Evenings in conjunction with special exhibitions. Part-time, paid internships are designed for undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in learning about museum practices and developing professional skills.

Teacher Partnerships

Teachers are among the Kimbell’s greatest champions and most enthusiastic program participants. Over the decades, the museum has partnered with teachers from around the state (and beyond) to arrange field trips for their students. Professional development sessions scheduled regularly throughout the school year, along with intensive summer programs, explore art historical topics, artists’ techniques, and teaching strategies.

For Teens, by Teens

Since 2014, Kimbell Teen Council members have played a vital role in presenting programs for fellow high school students while also learning about art, museum careers, creative practice, and community engagement. Their leadership and insights have informed the development of the Kimbell’s Teen Art Scope App, teen-led tours, seasonal Hangouts with peers, and other outreach events.

2021 Global Nexus Award

The Kimbell Art Museum was the 2021 Fort Worth Sister Cities International Global Nexus Award recipient. The Global Nexus Award is granted annually “to recognize organizations that have made a significant contribution to global understanding, world political stability and international trade or cooperative efforts to solve international health, economic, social or environmental challenges.”
